The Chenab Bridge is a steel and concrete Arch Bridge that connects Bakkal and Kuri villages in Reasi district. Comparison, the Eiffel Tower of Paris is 324 meters high i.e. the Chenab Bridge is 35 meters higher than that. The Qutub Minar of Delhi which is 72 meters high, looks about 5 times smaller in front of it. This bridge is part of the Uddhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to connect Jammu and Kashmir to the rail network.
Chenab Bridge Cost: Chenab Bridge is made of 28,660 metric tonne steel
The construction of Chenab Bridge was a major challenge in itself. It used about 28,660 metric tonnes of steel to make it and its cost was around Rs 1,486 crore. This bridge is built in the inaccessible hills of the Himalayas, where there is a risk of earthquake due to earthquake zone-5. Despite this, it is designed to withstand 8 magnitude earthquakes and a speed of 266 km/h. To strengthen its foundation, drilling was done in deep rocks and high steel peers were used, the highest pear of which is 133.7 meters. The construction of the bridge started in 2002, but due to many challenges it took it till 2022 to complete. Its main arch was completed in 2021 and in August 2022, the bridge was fully ready.
