Sitting a few meters away was Simon the last one, one of the three co -founders of Note. It is Gangly and shy, an engineer who has given up on management responsibilities to concentrate on being a “super ic”, an individual contribution. He remained standing to tighten his hand and thankfully thank him for allowing me vibrant tail. Simon returned to his laptop, where he was monitoring artificial intelligence as he codified for him. Later, he told me that the use of coding app AI was how to manage a group of interns.
From 2022, the The notion app had an artificial intelligence assistant to help users draw up their notes. Now the company is redefining it as an “agent”, an artificial intelligence that will work independently in the background on your behalf while you face other tasks. To do this, humans must write a lot of code.
Open the cursor and select which of different artificial intelligence models would like to draw. Most of the engineers with whom I chatted during my favorite visit Claude or used the Claude Code app directly. After choosing their fighter, the engineers ask their artificial intelligence to draw up the code to create a new thing or to correct a function. The human programmer then debugs and tests the output if necessary, although AIS also helps with this, before moving to the code in production.
In its fundamental nucleus, generative artificial intelligence is enormously expensive. The theoretical savings came in the currency of the time, that is to say, if the IA helped the co -founder and CEO of Ivan Zhao to finish his duties before expected, he could Mosey at the Jazz Club on the ground floor of his building for market office and bliss for a while. Ivan likes jazz music. In reality, it fills the time by working more. The fantasy of the four -day working week will remain precisely this.
My working week at the idea was only two days, the last sprint of the code. (In exchange for full access to their lair, I agreed to identify only rank engineers and files with the name alone.) My first assignment was to correct the way in which a graphic designer called the siren diagram appears in the notion app. Two engineers, Quinn and ways, told me that these diagrams exist as a SVG files in notion and, despite being called scalable vector graphics, they cannot be reduced or enlarged as a JPEG file. As a result, the text inside the diagrams of the siren on the notion is often illegible.
Quinn slipped his laptop towards me. He had the cursor app open and ready, performing Claude. For Funesies, he brought part of the notion code base. “So, the basis of the notion code? It has many files. Probably, even as an engineer, you wouldn’t even know where to go,” he said, referring politely to me as an engineer. “But we will ignore all this. We will only ask the AI on the sidebar to do it.”
His vibrant coding strategy, Quinn explained, was often to ask the AI: Hey, why is it as it is? The question first forces the IA to do some of your research and the answer helps to inform the request that we, human engineers, would have written. After the “thought”, the cursor informed us, through text streaming lines, that the diagrams of the siren of the notion are static images that, among other things, lack manipulators and are not integrated with a whole screen infrastructure. Safe.
