McDonald’s is the last large company that faces a boycott, since a growing movement of consumer protests targeted the fast food giant on issues ranging from tax elimination and work practices to efforts of performative diversity. The protest, which runs from 24 to 30 June, is organized by People’s Union USA, a group known for its recent economic “blackouts” against Amazon, Walmart, Target and General Mills. The founder of the group, John Schwarz, presented five reasons for McDonald’s boycott in a recent Instagram post, accusing the company of hypocrisy and corporate exploitation.
The group states that its mission is “to expose corruption and exploitation” and “consider the companies responsible through organized economic action”.
Why is McDonald boycotted?
Schwarz states that McDonald’s pays less in taxes compared to his minimum wage workers by exploiting the gaps and offshore tax havens. The company has increased menus prices in recent years, despite the publication of record profits, which Schwarz states that it is equivalent to profit at the expense of ordinary customers.
The group also claims that McDonald’s has used franchising structures to avoid direct responsibility for workers’ conditions and has put pressure against wage increases and trade union protections.
The global supply chain of the chain, according to the group, is linked to deforestation, abuse of labor and unsustainable agricultural practices.
While the company promotes (diversity, equity and inclusion) in advertising, Schwarz accuses McDonald’s of donating to political causes and candidates who undermine the rights and work rights.
Dei (diversity, equity and inclusion) refers to policies in the workplace and suppliers who aim to support the under -representative communities. McDonald’s had previously engaged in these objectives, including efforts to diversify leadership networks and suppliers.
However, at the beginning of 2025, the company began to resize its initiatives, abandoning the diversity objectives of the leadership and ending some supplier programs.
On the right, Dei has become a point of flammability in the wars of culture, especially after the return of Donald Trump to the presidency in 2025, when he issued executive orders to eliminate the “illegal” both in the government and in corporate sectors.
Who is behind the boycott?
This boycott is led by People’s Union USA, a populist organization of the guard dog.
Since February, the organization has asked for boycotts from other important brands and is planning future actions against Starbucks, Home Depot and Lowe.
Will he have an impact?
This remains unclear. The previous boycott had conflicting results. Some have caused temporary drops in sales or in the price of actions, while others have had little effect.
But what is clear is that the battle on DEI is now a central problem in the American cultural war and the main brands like McDonald’s are captured in the middle.
