Dinesh’s Patnaik is currently working as the Ambassador of India in Spain. According to recent reports, he is likely to be appointed as the new High Commissioner of India in Canada to improve stressful relations between India-Canada. His possible appointment is considered an essential step for the betterment in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The relations between India and Canada have been tense since the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder. India had rejected it as baseless. After this, the two countries expelled each other’s diplomats and stopped business talks like CEPA. Now IFS officer Dinesh is expected to improve relationship with Patnaik’s appointment in Canada.

Who is Dinesh’s Patnaik?

Dinesh’s Patnaik was born in Odisha. There is not much data available related to their education. But many media reports are being described as a passout from IIM Kolkata in the social media account named after him. He joined IFS i.e. Indian Foreign Service in 1990. In his 35 -year career, he worked in many important diplomatic positions.

Deputy Consulture in Britain (2016-2018): During service in London, he developed a deep understanding on sensitive issues like Khalistan, which is necessary for his possible role in Canada.

Ambassador to Spain (present): His effective diplomacy as India’s ambassador to Spain made him a suitable candidate for complex missions like Canada.

Other important posts: Patnaik of Dinesh represented India in various missions like Russia, Myanmar and United Nations. He was also a director in the Polysi Planning and Research Division in the Ministry of External Affairs.

The initiative to improve relations between the two countries has started after the new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Canada during the G7 Summit. According to Hindustan Times report, India has proposed the name of Dinesh’s Patnaik for the post of High Commissioner in Ottawa. Their appointment is considered necessary to restore confidence between the two countries and increase cooperation in areas like business, education and security.

Dinesh’s Patnaik served as a sub -mission head at the Indian Embassy in Vienna from 2009 to 2012. He was the Ambassador of India in Cambodia from 2012 to 2015. From 2015 to 2016, he was India’s ambassador to Morocco. From 2016 to 2018, he was the Deputy High Commissioner of India in London. From November 2018 to July 2019, he was Additional Secretary (Indian Ocean Area) in the Ministry of External Affairs and then worked as Additional Secretary (CPV and OIA) from July 2019 to January 2020.

Dinesh’s Patnaik has done an MBA from IIM Kolkata. He has also obtained a master’s degree in Advanced International Studies from Vienna University and a certificate in International Studies from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. These days he is holding the post of Director General in Indian Council for Cultural Relations. IFS officer Dinesh’s wife’s wife’s name is Poonam (Dinesh K Patnaik Wife). She is an international teacher. They have two daughters.
