UPSC Prelims Attempts Limit: How many times can you take UPSC exam?
The Union Public Service Commission has set an attack limit for UPSC exam. This eligibility is determined according to various categories.
Number Of Attempts
General and EWS: 6 attempts
OBC: 9 attempts
SC/ST: unlimited effort (to age limit)
PWBD:
General and OBC PWBD: 9 attempts
SC/ST PWBD: unlimited effort (to age limit)
An attempt is counted when the candidate is involved in at least one paper in the prelims examination. Only filling the application is not counted.

The age of age for UPSC exam can be understood as according to 2025- the age limit is calculated on 1 August 2025 as the basis. You should be within the following age limit by 1 August 2025:
minimum age: 21 years (for all categories)
Maximum age:
OBC: 35 years (3 years discount)
SC/ST: 37 years (5 years exemption)
PWBD:
General and OBC PWBD: 42 years (10 years discount)
SC/ST PWBD: 42 years (unlimited efforts, but age limit 42 years)
Ex -servicemen: 37 years (5 years exemption for General)
Higrary of Jammu and Kashmir (living there between 1980–1989): 37 years (5 years discount)
In some cases (eg OBC+Ex -Servicemen) Candidates may be added. Example: OBC ex -servicemen can get 3 (OBC) + 5 (Ex -servicemen) = 8 years exemption i.e. maximum age 40 years.
UPSC Prelims Eligibility Criteria: Eligibility of UPSC Examination
Educational Qualification: There should be a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Final year students can also apply, but the mens will have to give proof of passing the degree while applying.
