UPSC: The new examination portal launched by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on May 28 has received a better response than expected. According to the report of The Indian Express, within a week of the commencement of the portal, more than 92% of the candidates have opted for the Aadhaar card for their identity verification.
This new portal is a big step towards making UPSC examination process simple, transparent and digital India. Candidates can now register in four phases-account Creation, Universal Registration, Common Application Form and Examination Application.

More than 2.65 lakh accounts created

According to UPSC data, 2.65 lakh accounts had been created by Wednesday, out of which 1.13 lakh candidates completed universal registration. Of these, 1.05 lakh candidates opted for Aadhaar authentication. Apart from this, more than 60,000 candidates have filled the Common Application Form, while 55,000 are in the form process.

UPSC President Dr. Ajay Kumar said, “We are constantly improving the facilities of the portal. Candidates will not have to fill the same information again and again. Once the registration the same details will be used in all examinations. This will increase both convenience and transparency.”

Biometric system implemented for the first time

It is worth noting that for the first time a biometric-based verification system has been implemented in UPSC. Earlier, the Aadhaar card was accepted as an identity card, but there was no biometric authentication. In August 2024, the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) allowed UPSC to allow Aadhaar verification on voluntary basis. This decision came into the discussion when the case of Pooja Khedkar, accused of joining the 2022 Civil Services Examination, came to light. UPSC canceled his candidature and later DOPT dismissed him from service.

New portal will cover 14 exams

The new portal will now cover 14 major examinations including Civil Services Examination, Joint Defense Services Examination and National Defense Academy Examination. Although Aadhaar verification is still voluntary, the Commission has advised the candidates to adopt it as it increases the document verification. UPSC said in its statement, “Candidates are advised to use Aadhaar card in universal application, so that simple, easy and fast verification can be possible. This will prepare a permanent record, which will work in all exams.”
