IAS Ki Kahani: Travel started from a small town of Tripura
Dhiman Chakma was born in a small town Kanchanpur in Tripura. His father is a school teacher, while the mother is a housewife. A region like Tripura has less share in examinations like UPSC but Dhiman achieved a big place with his hard work. His story became an inspiration for those who have big dreams from small cities. According to information given on Linkdin profiles, Dhiman did B.Tech in Computer Science from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) of the festive. This was not easy for them, because lack of resources and lack of awareness in an area like Tripura is a big challenge. After completing his studies, Dhiman started preparing for UPSC. His hard work and dedication gave him a place in the first Indian Forest Service (IFS) and he was posted as an IFS officer in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.
UPSC Story: UPSC twice, 482th rank
Dhiman Chakma achieved success twice in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. In 2019 he achieved 722nd rank, after which he was selected in the Indian Forest Service (IFS). His dream was to become IAS. In 2020, he again took the UPSC exam and this time achieved 482nd rank. This success made him a 2021 batch IAS officer and he joined the Odisha cadre. His name is included in the results of 2020 on UPSC’s official website upsc.gov.in. After the success of 2020, he took one year training after which the 2021 batch IAS was appointed.
IAS Posting: Deputy Collector made in Dharamgarh
After becoming IAS in 2021, Dhiman Chakma was appointed as the deputy collector of Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district of Odisha. Under this, he had to oversee local administration and development works, but his responsibility was involved in controversies when a case of bribery came to light.
Caught taking a bribe of Rs 10 lakh
On 8 June 2025, Odisha Vigilance caught Dhiman Chakma red -handed taking a bribe of Rs 10 lakh. It is being told that a local businessman had asked for Rs 20 lakh. Half of the amount was given. Half of the amount was given. Vyapari alleged that Chakma had threatened to take action against his stone crusher unit, after which the Vigilance took the Jalna and the Vigilance Neye Jalle caught up. He counted 26 bundle notes and placed them in the drawer of his office table. In the chemical test, both his hands and drawer were found positive. After this, Rs 47 lakh cash was recovered from his residence.
Vigilance filed a case
Vigilance has registered a case against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (Amendment 2018). This case not only damaged the image of Dheeman, but also questioned the morality of the IAS officers.

What will happen next?
Investigation is going on against Dhiman Chakma and Vigilance is going into the depth of the case. A stock of Rs 47 lakh and other evidence found from his government residence can make this case more serious. This case not only raises questions on Dhiman’s career, but also states how important transparency and accountability in the system is. Dheemon Chakma had emerged as an inspiration for all the youth but an incident has destroyed his entire career. After coming out of a small town like Tripura, studying from NIT, and UPSC, it was not easy to achieve success in the UPSC. Now the question is whether their innocence will prove to be innocent after investigation or will this matter become the end of their career? This will tell the time to come.
