The prices of coconut oil are increasing in Asia, where the main consumer India leads the charge with a triple in two years, since the lack of supply and the demand with strong expansion for water rich in nutrients enclosed within transforming the base of the kitchen into a premium product.Edible oil is sliding out of the reach of consumers attentive to prices and those used to its distinctive flavor, deeply incorporated in regional cuisine, they must try more to find alternatives.

“I will pass to the cheaper refined sunflower oil to cook daily or save coconut oil for the dishes where its flavor is absolutely irreplaceable,” said Leelamma Cherian, who lives in the southern state of Kerala in India.

The price wave that began in the second half of 2024 was accelerated by the interruptions of production through the main nations of the producers from India to the South -est Asia, caused by lower rains, prolonged heat and more devastation by parasites and diseases. The prices in India are almost tripled in less than two years, to a record of 423,000 rupees ($ 4,840) a metric ton, while global prices went up to a historic maximum of $ 2,990 per ton in the same period.

A group of manufacturers, the International Coconut Community (ICC), states that the growing demand in front of the production limits will maintain the global prices of the second half between $ 2,500 and $ 2,700, well beyond the figure of 2023 of about $ 1,000.

Coconut oil supplies usually improve in Southeast Asia in the second half and the new season production will help to facilitate record prices, said a Singapore-based vegetable oil trader.

“However, prices will probably not go down below $ 2,000 at any time soon,” he said.

A drop in less than $ 1,800 a tonne in the next two years has been unlikely, he added, indicating the negligence of the plantations and the unfavorable time in recent years since the factors could delay a wider production recovery, especially at a time when the supplies of other similar lauric oils are narrow.

“While prices should gradually alleviate, the current rally is likely to establish a new normality.”

The price wave also affects unripe green coconut collected for their water charged with electrolytes and products such as covers, milk and dust, while shampooing producers and skin care products, which reward the oil for its high content of lauric acid.

Squeeze

On a global level, the production of coconut oil is decreasing with the age of the trees, the replanting proves inadequate and the plantations face with a shortage of better varieties of seeds, said Dorab Mistry, director of the Indian consumer goods company Godrej International.

The world production of coconut oil was 3.67 million tons in 2024-25, without any growth in the last three decades, except for minor annual fluctuations, says the Department of Agriculture of the United States.

As the weather conditions oscillate more and more from warm and dry spells to sudden heavy rains, both extremes interrupt the production of coconut, said Joe Ling, executive director of the Linco group of Malaysia, a prominent supplier.

In these days, at least one country of production is interested: if the dry climate is not reducing production in Indonesia or Malaysia, it is very likely that the fans are interrupting production in the Philippines, or vice versa, said Ling.

The yields decreased in 2023 while the meteorological phenomenon of El Nino brought above the heat rains and below the average to the main growth regions, said a dealer based in Mumbai in a global commercial house, which searched anonymity in line with corporate policy.

The deficit was reflected only in 2024, since coconut walnuts generally need almost a year to mature after flowering.

In the wake of years of insults thanks to the low prices, the production of coconut was further affected by the epidemic of Covid-19, since the blocks brought a collapse of the supply and prices.

This in turn led farmers to neglect the plantations, with consequent yields lower when the demand began to recover when the influencers of social media have beaten attention on the benefits for the health of coconut water.

A greater demand for water pushed farmers to collect coconut walnuts before and further reduced the supply of mature nuts used to produce oil and covers.

Even at higher prices, the health benefits perceived continue to feed the demand for coconut food products, Linco Group said Ling.

The rally led its company to increase almost monthly prices and maintain supplies despite shocking customers, added Ling.

Palm Kernel oil with Coconut Oil Oil Oil, also produced mainly in Asia, has risen to a record of $ 1,000 per tonne, increasing compared to the usual $ 100 to $ 200. Even the prices of the Palma kernel oil have increased, climbing 30% this year.

Any important turn from coconut oil could increase alternative prices, including the palm kernel oil for industry and palm oils, soybeans and sunflowers for families.

Global question

While the coconut oil is popular in Asia, the demand for Copra, coconut and milk cream is strong in Great Britain, China, Europe, Malaysia, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

To capitalize on the increase in demand, Indonesian farmers are shipping more whole coconuts instead of extracting oil, said Amrizal Idroes, vice -president of the Indonesian Coconut Processing Industry Association.

Exports of Indonesian coconut oil decreased by 15% between January and June, while shipments of articles such as dried coconut and endocarp coconut increased by 58% every year, showed the government data.

The deficiencies stimulated requests for changes to commercial policies that make more oil available at home.

In Indonesia, the association has urged the suspension of coconut exports for six-12 months to stabilize prices, while in India, the association of solvents extractors asked New Delhi to allow coconut oil imports and cover.

India strictly regulates coconut oil imports, with a duty of over 100% that makes them expensive and traders have required to seek permits from state commercial businesses.

Higher prices have prompted farmers to expand the sowing, with a strong demand for seedlings that exhausted most of the venas of Vivai this year, said an official of the Indian state coconut development committee, which searched anonymity.

But the performance of the new plantations takes four or five years to enter, so the prospects are desolate for the prices that are placing quickly.
