Who is Justice BV Nagarathna: Who is Justice Nagratna?
Justice BV Nagratna was born on 30 October 1962 in Bengaluru. His father Justice E.S. Venkatarmaiya became the Chief Justice i.e. CJI in the Supreme Court in 1989, in such a situation, he got an atmosphere of law from home. In childhood, she grew up amidst books, court talk and legal discussions. She studied law from Delhi University and started practicing in the Karnataka High Court in 1987. She became a judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2008 and reached the Supreme Court on 2021. Now on 25 May 2025 she has become the 5th senior judge of the Supreme Court and she is also the first woman to join the Supreme Court Collegium.
How to become the first woman CJI?
CJI is appointed in India on the basis of seniority. Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka has retired in the top-5 senior judges of the Supreme Court after retiring on 23 May 2025. On this basis, she will become the 50th CJI of the country on 11 September 2027 and will hold the post till 29 October 2027. That is, his tenure will be about a month, but this will be the first time a woman will be in this post.
