Dr. Daniel Rayal, Principal Investigator of HDTN Project at the Glenn Research Center, said that this experiment is a tremendous achievement. He said that now we can work on the success of 4K HD video streaming from space station, so that our Artemis can develop capabilities like HD video conferencing for astronauts.

Significantly, NASA has trusted radio waves to send information from the space. This work has been very reliable till now. In comparison, infrared lights are used in laser communication, which can send 10 to 100 times faster data compared to traditional radio frequency systems.

NASA collaborated with Air Force Research Laboratory to achieve recent success. Glenn engineers temporarily installed a portable laser terminal on the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft. He flew the aircraft. The flying aircraft sent a data to an optical ground station in Cleveland, which was sent to NASA’s white sands test facility in New Mexico with the help of a network. From there, scientists used infrared light signals to send data.
