Under NASA’s Viking Mission, two landers landed on Mars. On 20 July 1976, Viking on 1 and 3 September 1976, Viking 2 landers landed on the surface of Mars. Many instruments were fitted in them. The purpose of both landers was to discover the possible evidence of life on the red planet.
Under the experiment, water was added to the soil of Mars, so that signs of respiration and metabolism would appear. The theory behind it was that if there was life on Mars, then the microster, nutritious elements present in the soil will take and leave the radioactive carbon out as gas. However, this did not happen. This may be due to hydrogen peroxide in the cells of possible life on Mars.
Both landers under the Viking Mission were over between 1980 and 82. However, he is still present on the planet.
