‘Pahalgam was never so deserted’

A tour operator, Nasir Ahmed, told the news agency PTI that even after a month the place looks deserted. Ahmed said, “Thousands of tourists used to come to Pahalgam every day, which gave livelihood opportunities to shopkeepers, roadside goods, pony, taxi drivers and hotel businessmen.” He further said that the resort city of Pahalgam was not so deserted even at the peak of the 1990s extremism. He said, ‘We used to host local visitors (Kashmiris) and this used to support the economy even in the worst time. However, this time the local visitors are not coming.

Local businessman Mohammad Ashraf told news agency ANI, ‘My main business is connected with vehicles, which is related to tourism. It has been a month since tourists were killed in Pahalgam. This should not have happened. Those terrorists should not have done what. Pahalgam is deserted from that day. We have all these vehicles, but there is no one to hire them. Nevertheless, we hope that tourism will flourish again in the coming days or next year. We have 100% confidence in the government that things will be better once again.

He further said, now we are hosting our hopes on the Amarnath Yatra, which will earn a little earning. Right now, there is no tourist … I am 55 years old, I have seen terrorism. But this is the first time that there is an attack in Pahalgam. This was our misfortune. This should not have happened.

What happened on 22 April?

On April 22, terrorists attacked tourists in the Basaron Valley of Jammu and Kashmir. It was one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. In this, four to five terrorists associated with Lashkar came to the Basaron grasslands of Pahalgam and opened fire on tourists, killing 26 people including foreign tourists and many others were injured. Lashkar’s branch The Resistance Front (TRF) took responsibility for the attack, although it later withdrew its statement after heavy resentment globally.

India runs ‘Operation Sindoor’

India responded to the cruel attack in Pahalgam under ‘Operation Sindoor’. The Indian Army attacked nine terrorist bases in Pakistan and POK on 7 May. The Indian armed forces destroyed several camps of terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) and Hizbul Mujahideen, killing more than 100 terrorists. Army officials said many top terrorists have been killed in various campaigns launched after the terrorist attack, although the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam massacre are out of the grip of security forces.
