New Delhi (JNU Vice Chancellor)Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has recently decided to change the word ‘Vice Chancellor’ used in Hindi to its Vice Chancellor to ‘Kulguru’. This step has been taken with the objective of promoting gender neutrality (gender-platform) and to keep pace with the old educational traditions of India. The announcement of this change is the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Pantishree Dhulipudi Pandit has done it.

The current Vice Chancellor of JNU Prof. Pantishree Dhulipudi Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru University This proposal has been presented at the Executive Council meeting of This decision is likely to be implemented in this year i.e. 2025 itself. It will be included in the degree certificate and other official documents. This means that the current VCs of JNU will now see the Vice Chancellor in which the Vice Chancellor will be seen.

Vice Chancellor to Kulguru: Why changed?

The decision to make the post of Vice Chancellor in Jawaharlal Nehru University has been taken for many reasons. Can understand them below-

Gender neutrality target: The word ‘Vice Chancellor’ means ‘husband of clan’ or ‘head of family’. It is considered to be gender-specific. At the same time, ‘Kulguru’ means ‘teacher’ or ‘spiritual guide’. It is gender neutral and suitable for a person of any gender. Current Vice Chancellor of JNU Prof. Pantishree Dhulipudi Pandit said that this change is to promote gender neutral language, which reflects inclusion and equality.

Inspiration from ancient traditions: The change in the title of Vice Chancellor at Jawaharlal Nehru University is also said to be inspired by the Guru-Shishya tradition of India. In this, the Guru is considered a symbol of knowledge and not of a particular gender. Pro. Pantishree Dhulipudi Pandit described it as suitable according to the Indian educational model. In states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, a resolution has been passed to address the Vice Chancellor as the Vice -Chancellor.
