The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is helping the Coffee Board of India to quantify the carbon carbon footprint and evaluate the potential for the carbon seizure of the harvest.
“Collaborative studies with ISRO have been started to quantify the seizure of carbon in the coffee plantations shaded in India,” said Menthil Kumar, director of the research, Coffee Board, adding that ISRO is collecting data.
The goal is to quantify the carbon café footprint against the background of the EU deforestation regulation, which requires companies to ensure that the products exported to the EU have been grown on the ground that have not been deforested after 31 December 2020.
The regulation has implications for Indian coffee, cocoa, soybean, wooden products, rubber and its products and exports of leather items. For non -compliance, it prescribes fines up to 4% of the annual turnover of a company in the EU and the confiscation of products and revenue earned by a transaction.Senthilkumar said that the forming of nutrients and biological supplements have been evolved for a sustainable coffee diet and these initiatives led to the exports of India coffee in the 2015 year of 40% on an annual basis at $ 1.8 billion.
The production of coffee in India has reached 363,000 tons in the fiscal year.
“We came out with a formulation to improve the surrender and increase the number of berries and the conservation of the berries. There are three high -performance varieties on which the coffee commission is making multi -six tests,” he said.
The Board of Directors has released 13 varieties of Arabica coffee and 3 robust and will require geographical indications for two varieties. At the moment, the tags are granted for Arabic Coorgs, Arabic Bababudangiri, CHIKMAGALUR Arabica, Araku Valley and Wayanad Robusta Coffee.The officials said that 490,000 hectares of land are under coffee plantations in 12 states, of which 30% is the variety of Arabica and 70% are robust.
