IPS Story, Up News: This is the story of the senior of UP IPS officer Ashish Gupta’s (who is IPS Ashish Gupta). Ashish Gupta hails from Lucknow city of UP. He was born on 25 December 1966. Ashish, who was fast in studies from the beginning, first did B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur. After this he earned an MBA degree from IIM Kolkata. Even after such a spectacular studies, he did not fill his mind, so he started preparing for UPSC. In the year 1988, he passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination and became an IPS of 1989 batch. After one year of training, he was appointed in UP cadre. Since then, he has handled many responsibilities in the UP Police.

Ashish Gupta’s career has been quite excellent. He is the second most senior of UP IPS He is and is currently holding DG Rules and Manuals. He has also been the CEO of the central government’s anti-terraler agency Natgrid. Apart from this, he has also worked as Additional Director General in BSF. In 2000-2002, he went to Kosovo for the UN Peacekeeping Mission and also won the UN Peacekeeping Medal for his service there. In 2014, he was also awarded the President’s Police Medal, but in 2022, a twist came in his life. In December 2022, he returned to UP from central deputation, but he was not given any posting for 6 months. In June 2023, he was finally made DG Rules and Manuals, but it is being told that he was angry with such a long wait. Eventually, he filed VRS application before retirement. He gave 3 months notice for this and on 10 June 2025 he is now retiring. His decision is also being seen by connecting with not becoming a DGP.

There has been a political uproar over Ashish Gupta’s VRS. SP President Akhilesh Yadav launched a scathing attack on the Yogi government on this issue. Akhilesh said that senior officers of UP Police are being denied important posts, due to which they are taking VRS under compulsion. According to him, this is breaking the morale of dutiful officers and the public has to bear the brunt of this. Akhilesh also raised the question that what is the meaning of seniority, if senior officers would be sidelined?

Several media reports said that a message made on a WhatsApp group put a brake on Ashish Gupta’s career. A media report quoted an officer as saying that Ashish Gupta wrote against the encounter policy in WhatsApp group, after which he returned to UP after the central rule, after which he was not given any posting. It is believed that Ashish was unhappy with a long time waiting for posting and then getting a less important post. Eventually he decided that he would not wait anymore and take VRS.
