The Waymo Sandy Karp spokesman confirmed the break and adjustments of the service, but refused to comment further. There is no indication for how long the changes to the service will last.
The adjustments will influence the service in San Francisco; Austin, Texas; And Atlanta, Georgia. On Friday afternoon, some San Francisco cyclists saw in-app messages that showed that all the robotasses of the company were busy and therefore unable to take the racing.
The move comes a week after the demonstrators set fire to five autonomous taxis managed by the company in the center of Los Angeles. The images of the fires have become viral on social media and have become a flash point in the discussions on the violence of the protesters and on the role that the technology plays in the surveillance of citizens. The accident raised questions about the camera and the sensor data collected by Waymo on public roads and how or if it is shared with the police. At the beginning of this week, Karp told Wired that the company generally challenges excessively large data requests or that they do not have a solid legal base. He refused to comment on specific cases.
Sometimes it regulates the service areas in view of the main events marked by large crowds and traffic, including sports games and concerts, and in response to accidents such as fires or floods in which road safety is a concern.
