“People killed the tiger as a cannibal. We recovered the body and found that some parts of the body such as a part of the skin, one leg and the body are missing from the body,” he said. According to the official, the villagers surrounded the tiger from different sides and then chased him and killed him.

He said that the villagers used local weapons such as ax, sticks and rods to attack the tiger.

“On receiving information about the attack, a team of forest and police officers reached the spot. But the tiger was already killed.”

He said that all the villagers ran away from the spot after seeing the security personnel. The official said, “The forest department has registered a case.”

Khumatai MLA Mrinal Saikia condemned the murder and described the incident as “unfortunate and regrettable”.

He also demanded the government to intervene and emphasized the need for better preparation to deal with emergency situations related to wildlife. Forest department officials later recovered the body in the presence of the magistrate.
