First of all, you must be looking for any type of unexpected contact through a messaging app. You might think that it is easy to identify, but the scammers (and the IA they use) are very good at seeming convincing. They could also offer photos and videos to prove they are what they say they are.

Remember that the people you are communicating with may have done your homework on you. They could claim to be a friend of someone you will actually know or be part of an organization you used to volunteer for, to look more credible. You should certainly cheer any statements like this.

Ideally, don’t respond at all, because this will mark you for future scam attacks. If you think that the message could be authentic – people are wrong, after all, as much controls as possible before responding. For example, if it is linked to something that happens at work, check with your colleagues.

If you come hired by the first message, the scam should be easier to identify as the exchange advances. Robots and people on the other side of the conversation will try to involve you in the chat, perhaps asking questions or perhaps sharing photos and videos.
