In 2022, the security commission of US consumer products sent a letter By exhorting the over 2,000 manufacturers and EBIKE importers to review the relevant safety standards and ensure that their products comply with them.
“It was ready to create mandatory federal standards for the safety of the lithium -ion battery”, says Lovell, “but the agency is currently at a suspension point in terms of creating new regulations while it is revised by the Trump administration”.
Currently, UL certification for electric bicycles is required only in New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey. “Peopleforbikes supported the legislation of models, created by the bicycle industry, which accepts both the UL standard and the standard EN for lithium -ion batteries and electronic systems,” says Lovell. That legislation of the model is the law in the state of New York and California and will soon also be in Illinois.
To find out if the ebike you are observing is certified of third parties, looking for a adhesive on the frame or battery that contains information on its compliance.
What is the DIN standard?

The load bikes carry heavy loads: strokes, food, supplies for construction and anything else can be transported from two to three to four wheels. Consequently, the brakes and other components of a load bike that allow him to stop safely and to go in a more requested way.
In 2020, the German Institute for standardization (DIN) has developed a “DIN” standard to face this. The result is DIN 79010, “the first standard to specify the test methods and the safety requirements of electrical and non -electric load bikes”, says Lovell, adding that it is the single track bikes (two -wheeled) and multitrack (three or more between wheels or more) intended for the transport of general load and/or passengers are covered in this standard.
“While DIN 79010 is explored in Europe as mandatory, the United States are not intended to adopt it as a mandatory standard in the near future,” says Lovell. But many loading companies, such as Stern, voluntarily respect the standard.
How will the rates influence my purchase?
If you are looking at an Ebike, we recommend that you buy one at the moment, before final agreements are made between the United States and China, together with other countries such as Vietnam, Taiwan and Cambogia.
“We are currently all waiting to see the final form of mutual rates,” says Matt Moore, General Consultant and Peopleforbikes policy. “Most electric bicycles are imported from China and the tariff rate stacked right now adds up to 55 percent.”
Very high rates, Warns Moore, will force significant price increases throughout the supply chain, ending with the consumer’s digital pocket book. The high rates supported will bring to permanently higher prices, reducing economic accessibility and consumer demand.
“The smallest companies will be less able to manage these additional costs and some may be forced without activities,” says Moore. “Since electric bicycles have guided growth in our very competitive sector in which the overall unitary demand has decreased in recent years, higher costs and prices due to rates have the potential to be an existential crisis.”
