Pilot Recruitment Process – Step by Step
What should be the qualification?
New or Trainee Pilot (Cadet / Junior First Officer)
DGCA (India) valid CPL (Commercial Pilot License)
Valid Frto and RTR (A) License
At least level 4 in English lagves
Class-I Medical Certificate (for Fitness)
Age is usually between 18 and 35 years
Valid ATPL (for Commander) or CPL with type rating
Flight experience (hours fixed according to aircraft and post)
Instrument rating (if necessary)
It is beneficial to have experience of flying aircraft like Airbus A320, Boeing 777, 787.
How is the selection?
Written examination (some experienced pilots may get exemption)
Psychometric Test or Compass Test (Mental Capacity Check)
Simulator Test – Practice of flight in a fake aircraft
Technical and HR Interview
Class I Fitness)
Documents and background check
Training and type rating
If a pilot is not already trained on a particular aircraft (eg A320 or B777), then he has to do type rating training. This includes.
Ground class – Aircraft information and flight processes
Simulator Training – Flight Practice on Computer
Base Training – Flights with trainer in real aircraft
Finally you have to pass the check ride from DGCA
Does different training take place for international flights?
There is no completely different training for international flights. This training is gradually given according to the experience of the pilot and the level of flight.
Pilots who fly international flights:
They are usually more experienced (eg 1500+ hour experience)
Large aircraft such as boeing 777 or 787 are trained in flying
ETOPS training (required for two long distance two-engine flights)
Navigation is informed about Across the Sea, Time Zone Management and International Rules.
Additional training involved
RVSM (allowed to fly with low height difference)
NAT-HLA / MNPS / RNP Aerspace Rules
Cold weather or polar operation (if necessary)
The selection process of domestic and international pilots is the same. But pilot needs more experience and special training for international flights. This training depends on the progression, performance and type of aircraft of the pilot.
