What is Manusmriti?
Manusmriti is an ancient religious text, which has written things related to religion and politics. It has a total of 2694 verses, which are divided into 12 chapters. These include Hindu rites, shraddha, ashram system, Hindu marriages and rules for women, as well as the caste system has also been explained in it. It is written that Brahmaji created the world. Brahmins from his mouth, Kshatriya with arms, Vaishya from the stomach and Shudra Varna from the feet originated. The work of every varna was told.
Why is there opposition to Manusmriti?
In Manusmriti, there is opposition to caste system and things written about women. It has been said that women should always stay with father, husband or son, and they cannot be independent alone. Apart from this, it is also criticized for promoting the caste system. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar also opposed Manusmriti. He wrote in his book Philosophy of Hinduism that Manu laid the foundation of caste system by keeping four varnas separately. On 25 July 1927, Ambedkar publicly burnt Manusmriti in Colaba, Maharashtra.
