New Delhi: For the first time, India has passed China to become the main smartphone supplier in the United States on the quarter of June. This was largely fueled by Apple’s move to accelerate the movement of iPhone assembly operations in India from China between tariff uncertainties within the Trump administration, according to the Canalys research company. The uncertain outcome of the current negotiations between Washington and Beijing for a commercial agreement accelerated the renovation of the Apple supply chain, he said.
The share of the shipments of US smartphones assembled in China fell to 25 % in the quarter of June from 61 % a year earlier. Much of this decline was captured by India.Total shipments of smartphones manufactured in India in the United States increased by 240 % per year. It included 44 % of the phones imported in the United States in the second quarter of 2025, an increase of more than three times from 13 % a year before.
Canalys said that the shipments of US smartphones grew by 1 % of the year in the quarter of June while the sellers continued to make the inventories load in the midst of tariff problems.
“India has become the main production hub for smartphones sold in the United States for the first time in the second quarter of 2025, largely led by the accelerated change of the Apple supply chain in India in an uncertain commercial landscape between the United States and China,” said Saint Canda, the main analyst of Canalys.
However, he observed that while Apple has resized the offer from India as part of his China plus a strategy, even manufacturing and exporting the most complex models from India, still depends on the manufacturing bases in China for a greater supply of its professional models to the United States. For basic iPhone models, however, India has become the largest supplier for the United States on the quarter of June. Apple opted to dedicate most of its export capacity to India to be provided to the US market in 2025. Samsung and Motorola also improved supplies for phones from India, although their shifts are significantly more slow and smaller scale than Apple’s. “Motorola, similar to Apple, said his Core production hub in China, while Samsung is mainly committed to producing its smartphones in Vietnam,” said Motolasia. “Chaurasia”.
According to Canalys data, iPhone exports from India to the United States reached the peak in March in view of the announcement of the Trump administration of mutual rates on its commercial partners, including India, which was eventually deferred on 1 August.
