As Apple has created a personalized iPhone camera for ‘F1’

You cannot mount a cinematographic camera on a Formula 1 racing machine. These agile vehicles are built with precise specifications and capturing films from the driver’s point of view is not as simple as slapped a GoPro and calling it one day. This is the challenge that Apple faced after Joseph Kosinski and Claudio Miranda, director and director of others F1 Apple Original, he wanted to use POV racing movies in the film.

If you look at a Formula 1 race today, you have probably seen clips showing a corner from behind the pilot cabin, with the top or side of the driver’s helmet in the frame. Instead, Apple’s engineering team replaced the transmission form with a camera consisting of iPhone parts.

Personalized camera

The module does not resemble an iPhone. It intentionally resembles the transmission camera module and Apple has even had to combine weight so that its version does not change the specifications of a car. At the heart there is an iPhone camera sensor powered by a series of Serie A. Apple did not specify the exact sensor or chipset, but these were used for some cars in the real races of F1 during the seasons 2023 and 2024, so there is the possibility that it was the same main camera A17 Pro and 48 Megapixel in the iPhone 15 Pro. It also contained a battery for iPhone and a neutral density filter Camera to reduce the light that entered the objective, offering more control over the exposure to the film editors.

Nobody expects a camera for iPhone to perform perfectly at incredible speeds or extreme conditions, so the engineering team had to consider this factor. The module performed iOS but had a personalized firmware for the camera. The videos were captured in register format with the video codec without loss of Apple loss, offering movies that seem to dishes but which gives editors a much more granular control for the degree of color and combines graphics with the rest of the film. This personalized firmware inevitably led to two new features in the iPhone 15 Pro: coding of the register and support for the color flow of the Coloding System (Aces) Academy.

Since there are no radio in the module, a personalized iPad app was the only way the filmmakers could make changes to the camera. Once connected via USB-C, they could adjust things such as the frame rate, the exposure gain, the shutter corner and the white balance.
